    Richard Yoon, MD, FAAOS, of RWJBarnabas Health in Jersey City, N.J., about the pros and cons of fixation or replacement of complex fractures of the hip and knee. The two biggest advantages to endoprosthetic replacement are reliable immediate weight-bearing and the ability to address the fracture pattern and preexisting arthritis simultaneously. Older adults have substantial challenges with partial or no weight-bearing, and those restrictions could render them unable to get out of bed or a wheelchair, further contributing to deconditioning.
